This fine-art cross stitch design, The Railway (also known as Gare Saint-Lazare), was developed from a painting done by the well-known French artist Edouard Manet in 1873 who was known as one of the most controversial artists in his time. This painting is the last painting done with his favorite model, Victorine Meurent. The child in the painting is the daughter of Manet's neighbor, Alphonse Hirsch. The painting depicts a young woman and a child sitting in front of an iron fence at the famous railway station the Gare Saint-Lazare in Paris, which was the largest and busiest train station in Paris during the 19th century. The railway tracks are not shown in the painting, and the only evidence of a train is the white cloud of steam. Apartment buildings are shown in the background which included the house on the Rue de Saint-Pétersbourg where Manet rented a studio. The Railway was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1874, and donated to the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC in 1956.
