This advanced fine-art cross stitch design, The Procuress, was developed from a painting by Dutch painter, Johannes Vermeer who is acknowledged as one of the greatest artists of the Dutch Golden Age. Vermeer painted highly detailed objects and attitudes in this painting. The scene takes place in a brothel, and Vermeer skillfully puts himself into the characters, helping us understand the meaning of their looks and poses. The emphasis is put on beauty - the quality of the tapestry and balustrade as well as the contrast of the yellow with the work's reddish-brown hue. It resides at the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden.
