Flags on 57th, Winter by Childe Hassam captures the energy, patriotism, and atmosphere of New York City during the winter of 1918. Painted as part of Hassam’s famous “Flag Series,” this vibrant urban scene transforms a busy snow-covered avenue into a dazzling display of movement, light, and national pride.
The painting looks down onto bustling 57th Street, where enormous American flags drape dramatically from buildings above the traffic and pedestrians below. Automobiles move through slushy winter streets while sunlight glimmers across the snow and wet pavement. Hassam’s energetic Impressionist brushstrokes create a sense of motion and immediacy, blending architecture, weather, and city life into a luminous tapestry of color and texture.
Created during World War I, Hassam’s flag paintings became symbols of patriotism and optimism. Rather than focusing on military scenes, he celebrated the spirit of everyday American life through the flags that transformed New York’s streets into grand civic displays. The repeated banners provide rhythm and structure within the composition, while the elevated perspective draws the viewer directly into the pulse of the city.
This museum-quality full-coverage cross-stitch pattern beautifully recreates the shimmering winter atmosphere, expressive brushwork, and iconic American imagery of Hassam’s original masterpiece. The intricate details of the city street, layered reflections, and flowing Impressionist colors make this a stunning project for stitchers who love historic cityscapes, patriotic art, and American Impressionism.
In this painting, Flags on 57th Street, Winter, by Childe Hassam (created in 1918), we see crowds of people preparing to march in the wintry, snow-covered streets of New York in support of World War I. Hassam was a strong supporter of the American involvement in World War I and was inspired by a "Preparedness Parade," later renamed "Avenue of the Allies" held during the Liberty Loan Drives of 1918 on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Thousands of people participated in these parades which often lasted for more than twelve hours.
Hassam did a Flag Series of about thirty paintings, several of which were contributed to the war relief in exchange for Liberty Bonds. He had hoped the entire series would sell as a war memorial but instead the paintings were sold individually at group exhibitions, the last being held at the Corcoran Gallery in 1922. This advanced fine-art cross stitch design was developed from this painting.
