Stitch the spectacular remains of an exploding star with Crab Nebula, a cross stitch pattern created from one of the Hubble Space Telescope's most extraordinary images.
Located about 6,500 light-years from Earth in the constellation Taurus, the Crab Nebula—also known as Messier 1 or M1—is the expanding remnant of a massive star that exploded as a supernova. The event was witnessed from Earth in 1054, when astronomers recorded the sudden appearance of a brilliant “guest star.” It was so bright that it could be seen during daylight for weeks.
Nearly a thousand years later, the remains of that explosion are still racing outward. In this remarkable Hubble image, tangled filaments of gas form an intricate web around a luminous blue interior. NASA explains that the orange filaments are largely hydrogen—the tattered remains of the exploded star—while the eerie blue glow near the center is produced by high-energy electrons moving around magnetic field lines at nearly the speed of light.
At the heart of the nebula lies an extraordinary object: the crushed core of the dead star. This pulsar, a rapidly rotating neutron star, spins approximately 30 times every second and sends tremendous amounts of energy into the surrounding nebula.
The Hubble mosaic was assembled from 24 individual exposures taken with the telescope's Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2. The colors are scientifically assigned rather than a literal representation of what the human eye would see, helping distinguish different chemical elements within the expanding debris.
With its glowing blues and greens, fiery gold and orange filaments, brilliant stars, and deep black background, Crab Nebula becomes an exceptionally dramatic cross stitch design. It's an exciting project for stitchers fascinated by astronomy, space exploration, supernovae, NASA imagery, and the extraordinary beauty of the universe.
