Formally known as NGC 6543, the Cat's Eye Nebula is one of the most intricate planetary nebulae ever observed. Against the darkness of space, brilliant layers of red, green, and glowing violet-blue surround the bright central star, creating the mesmerizing eye-like appearance that gives this celestial object its familiar name.
Located approximately 3,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Draco, the Cat's Eye records the final stages in the life of a Sun-like star. As the aging star shed its outer layers, it created an extraordinary structure of glowing gas, concentric shells, high-speed jets, bubbles, and knots. NASA describes the nebula as a kind of visual “fossil record” of the star's late evolution.
Even more fascinating are the rings surrounding the nebula. Hubble observations have revealed eleven or more concentric shells, suggesting that the central star expelled material in a series of pulses. Astronomers continue to investigate exactly how the Cat's Eye acquired its remarkably complex structure, with possible explanations involving stellar pulsations, magnetic activity, or the influence of a companion star.
With its luminous jewel-like colors set dramatically against black space, Cat's Eye Nebula makes a striking and unusual cross stitch project.
