Boreas and Orietyia, painted by Evelyn de Morgan in 1896, was the inspiration for this beautiful advanced cross stitch chart. In Greek mythology, Boreas was the Greek God of the North Wind who lived in a fertile region of Greece called Thrace. He is known as being extremely strong with amber wings and dressed in a short pleated tunic. Boreas is notorious for kidnapping Oreithyia, daughter of Erechtheus and Praxithea, king and queen of Athens. He had long loved this beautiful young girl, but never received permission from her parents to marry her. He lost patience with his modest wooing, and swooped down one day when Oreithyia was playing beside the Ilissus river, tucked her beneath his amber wings and carried her off to a rock near the river Ergines. She became his wife and they settled in the city of Thracian Cicones. They had twin sons (Calais and Zetes), who also grew golden wings on their shoulders after reaching adulthood, and two daughters (Cleopatra and Choine). This painting is part of the long tradition of Greek mythology stories and resides at the De Morgan Centre - London (United Kingdom).
