This beautiful downloadable cross stitch design was created from the painting, Birth of Venus, done by French artist William-Adolphe Bouguereau in 1879. It was created for the Paris Salon of 1879, was awarded the Grand Prix de Rome and was purchased by the state for the Musée du Luxembourg.
This painting is considered one of the most famous paintings of the 19th century. It symbolizes the actual birth of Venus from the sea as a fully mature woman arriving in a shell to Paphos, a coastal city in the southwest of Cyprus. Venus is considered the ideal of the female form and beauty. The painting is now in the permanent collection of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
