This advanced fine-art cross stitch design, Cupid and Psyche as Children, was developed from a painting done in 1890 by French artist William-Adolphe Bouguereau. Bouguereau's style was realistic genre paintings and he often used mythological themes. This painting was exhibited at the Salon of 1890 and is one of Bouguereau's most famous works. It stems from the story of Cupid and Psyche as told by Apuleius in the Golden Ass, and the painting shows two mythological angels as the subject, one kissing the other on the cheek. The original title of this painting was L'Amour et Psyche, enfantz; however one of the first virtual galleries on the Internet, Web Museum, mistakenly named it Le Premier Baiser (The First Kiss) (1873), and this error continues to be repeated.
