Stitch a spectacular stellar nursery with An Extended Stellar Family, an advanced cross stitch pattern adapted from an infrared image captured by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope.

This swirling landscape of brilliant stars and glowing clouds is the North America Nebula, a vast star-forming region whose familiar shape changes dramatically when viewed in infrared light. In visible light, clouds of cosmic dust create an outline resembling the North American continent. Spitzer's infrared vision can penetrate much of that dust, revealing a hidden world of young stars and glowing stellar nurseries.

The image truly is an extended stellar family. Clusters of stars only about one million years old are scattered throughout the nebula, while slightly older stars—still a youthful three to five million years old—appear across the complex and near the neighboring Pelican Nebula. Some of the darkest regions contain particularly dense clouds of dust where even Spitzer's infrared instruments have difficulty seeing through, concealing some of the youngest stars in the region.

The extraordinary palette isn't simply decorative. Spitzer recorded different wavelengths of infrared light that are invisible to human eyes and assigned them visible colors: shorter infrared wavelengths appear in blues and blue-greens, while longer wavelengths appear in greens and brilliant reds. The result is a breathtaking tapestry of emerald green, turquoise, gold, orange, and fiery red scattered with countless points of starlight.

With its intricate clouds, luminous colors, and seemingly endless field of stars, An Extended Stellar Family offers an absorbing challenge for experienced stitchers. The finished piece is an impressive celebration of astronomy, science, and the hidden beauty of our universe.
