This advanced fine-art cross stitch design, Young Woman with a Water Pitcher, was developed from a painting by Dutch painter, Johannes Vermeer who is acknowledged as one of the greatest artists of the Dutch Golden Age. Created between 1660 and 1662, the woman in this painting is shown as somewhat inexpressive which accounts for her universal appeal. True to Vermeer's theme of Woman and Virtue, it depicts the ideal woman in an ideal home, where beauty, luxury, and tranquility coexist. Henry Gurdon Marquand, an American financier, philanthropist and collector, purchased Young Woman with a Water Pitcher in 1887, brought it to the United States and donated the artwork to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. It was the first Vermeer painting in America.
