This advanced fine-art cross stitch design, Unveiling the Statue of Liberty , was developed from an 1886 painting by American artist, Edward Moran. Moran was inspired by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi who he met in 1876, and who told Moran of his plan to design the "Liberty Enlightening the World," better known as the "Statue of Liberty." Fundraisers in the United States and France, with the help of other sculptors, assisted Bartholdi in developing the statue which was completed in France in 1884, and arrived in New York Harbor in June 1885. The statue was placed on Bedloe Island.

The painting, Unveiling the Statue of Liberty, is a representation of the dedication of the statue (which Moran attended) on October 28, 1886, where warships fired a 21-gun salute to welcome President Grover Cleveland. Ships that flew the French and American flags filled the harbor as the smoke from the gun salute rolled across the island. Above all this, Liberty stood tall and clear with one hand holding a torch raised to the sky, while holding the tablet of the law, inscribed with the date of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, (July 4, 1776), in her other hand.

The Statue of Liberty arrived in New York in 1885. It had been broken into 350 pieces and packed into 214 shipping crates for its journey from France to the United States.
