Step into the elegance of 19th-century society with Too Early Cross Stitch Pattern by James Tissot. This refined and atmospheric painting captures a fashionable gathering in a grand ballroom, where beautifully dressed guests mingle beneath sparkling chandeliers while musicians perform in the background.
At the center of the composition, Tissot’s masterful attention to fabric, posture, and social nuance brings the scene to life. Flowing gowns in soft pinks and creams contrast against the polished wood floor and luminous interior, creating a sophisticated work filled with movement, conversation, and quiet drama.
Painted in 1873, Too Early reflects Tissot’s fascination with modern Parisian and Victorian high society. His highly detailed style and elegant compositions made him one of the great chroniclers of fashionable life during the late 19th century.
Tissot was extraordinarily talented in painting beautiful attire worn by women of society. When Tissot first arrived in London, he did a series of large-scale paintings, Too Early, being the first. This painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1873 and is considered one of his most celebrated and famous works. The scene in Too Early unfolds around the few early arrivals. It shows a moment of awkward embarrassment where guests have arrived too early for the event. Take note of the beautiful gowns worn by the women in this painting.
Carefully charted as a full-coverage design, this museum-quality cross-stitch pattern preserves the subtle textures, delicate lighting, and graceful details of the original painting.

Been in my Dreams
This painting has been in my dreams, since the early 1990’s, after I was gifted it as a print, my ex husband, unbeknownst to me threw it away while I was at work, I found out later about this, I didn’t know the name of the painter or the subject title, so for years all I could remember was the lady in the pink dress and the setting, this is going to be for me to enjoy stitching and looking at.
