This advanced fine-art cross stitch design, The Night Café, was developed from a painting done in September of 1888 in Arles, France, by Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh, one of the world's greatest artists. This is one of van Gogh's best-known paintings of the Arles period. It is a depiction of the interior of the Café de la Gare, an all-night tavern. It shows wildly contrasting vivid colors of green, red and yellow. The paint was applied thickly, and according to critics, the scene perspective is one of its most powerful effects. It draws the viewer past empty chairs and tables into the distant doorway. This painting resides at Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven.
