This advanced fine-art downloadable cross stitch design, The Birth of Venus, was developed from a painting by Italian artist of the Florentine school, Sandro Botticelli, and thought to have been painted in the mid 1480s. It depicts the moment when Venus was blown towards the shore by the god of winds, Zephyrus, and lands at Paphos in Cyprus. Botticelli's version of Venus shows a beautiful woman with delicate skin and long hair covering her nudity. Botticelli created this painting for the Medici family, and the theme of the painting was taken from the writings of the poet Homer. It is thought the model for Venus was Simonetta Vespucci, one of the most beautiful women of Florence.
