Rousseau's paintings are a remarkable combination of fantasy and actuality they are images transformed into a quaint private world. Many of the artists ridiculed Rousseau's style of painting but Paul Gauguin, Odilon Redon, Georges Seurat, Camille Pissarro, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec admired his work, and Rousseau himself believed he was a great artist.
