Recreate the charm of Stone City, Iowa, a 1930 masterpiece by Grant Wood, with this full-coverage cross-stitch pattern. This painting captures the former boomtown of Stone City, Iowa, in a unique and imaginative way. While the town had been built for its limestone quarries, the landscape in the painting is transformed with fantastical curvy shapes, ornamental trees, and bright, artificially patterned surfaces that convey the transition from industrialization back to a more rural community.

The town of Stone City, once thriving due to the quarries, was in rapid decline by the time Wood painted this piece, as Portland cement had replaced limestone as the dominant material. Wood’s painting thus becomes both a reflection of change and a meditation on time, depicting a landscape in flux. The Stone City Art Colony, which hosted artists including Wood during the summers of 1932 and 1933, added to the town’s significance as a cultural hub.

Stone City, Iowa was painted the same year as American Gothic, another of Wood's iconic works. Both paintings marked the success of his new style, which he called the "new movement" and which became a hallmark of American Regionalism. The painting is currently housed at the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska, and stands as an important example of Wood’s exploration of the American landscape, using stylized elements to create a distinct narrative.

This counted cross-stitch pattern brings the vivid colors and surreal landscape of Wood’s iconic painting to life. Available in regular and large print chart options, the pattern includes detailed instructions and a floss conversion chart, ensuring an enjoyable and immersive stitching experience as you bring this remarkable piece of American art into your home.
