American Gothic Cross Stitch Pattern - Grant Wood

What an interesting story can be found in the painting, American Gothic, by American artist Grant Wood. The house in the background (what is now known as the American Gothic House in Eldon, Iowa, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and owned by the State Historical Society of Iowa) was the inspiration for this painting. It was the Gothic windows in the gables of the house that caught Wood's attention. When first looking at the painting, one would think it was a realistic painting. However, that couldn't be further from the truth. Wood painted the house with the type of people he imagined should live in the house. The two people standing together in front of the house - his sister, Nan, and his dentist, Dr. B. H. McKeeby, never actually posed together in front of the house during the painting.

This painting brought instant fame to Grant Wood and is one of the most familiar images in 20th-century American art. It is in the art collection at the Art Institute of Chicago.
