This advanced fine-art downloadable cross stitch design is a detail from the painting Adele Bloch-Bauer 1 and was developed from a painting done in 1907 by artist Gustave Klimt. It is the first of two portraits Klimt painted of model Adele Bloch-Bauer and is referred to as the final work of his golden phase. It is considered by many to be his finest work.

The subject of this painting is adorned with precious materials and ancient artifacts, and Klimt gives almost every space on the canvas over to ornament. He leaves only the model's hands and upper body to describe her appearance. She sits on a throne-like chair, her neck sheathed in a gem-encrusted choker with her voluminous gown covered in geometric patterns, inspired by gold-embedded mosaics Klimt had seen on his trip to Ravenna, Italy. In the painting it shows the model, Adele Bloch-Bauer, with black hair piled on top of her head, and thick, lush eyebrows. There is a rosy tint to her full slightly-parted lips which gives it a sensual feel, unusual in portraits of that time. Adele Bloch-Bauer was married to a very wealthy man and enjoyed a luxurious life . . . some referred to her as the "Mona Lisa of Austria." Adele died of meningitis in 1925 at age 43.

This painting was stolen by Nazi Germany during their first big attack against the Jews in Vienna in 1945. It was retrieved through the efforts of her niece, Maria Altmann, in 2006 and sold to Ronald Lauder, co-founder and president of the Neue Galerie in New York City, for a $135 million, the highest price ever paid for a single painting at the time.

In 2015 Maria Altmann's story about the painting was made into a film called Woman in Gold starring Helen Mirren as Maria and Ryan Reynolds as her lawyer E. Randol Schoenberg.
