Bring a beloved nursery rhyme to life with Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary, a charming cross stitch pattern adapted from the work of celebrated American illustrator Jessie Willcox Smith.
In this delightful garden scene, a young girl in a wide-brimmed hat kneels among her flowers, carefully tending them with a large watering can. At first glance, it is simply a sweet childhood scene—but look more closely at Smith's whimsical garden. Among the colorful tulips are the fanciful “silver bells and cockle shells” and little figures representing the “pretty maids all in a row” from the familiar Mother Goose rhyme.
Jessie Willcox Smith (1863–1935) was one of the leading artists of America's Golden Age of Illustration. Particularly admired for her sensitive portrayals of childhood, she illustrated books, magazines, advertisements, and nearly 200 covers for Good Housekeeping. Her work frequently transformed the everyday world of children into scenes filled with warmth, imagination, and gentle storytelling.
This illustration appeared with the traditional Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary rhyme in Smith's Mother Goose illustrations. By 1914, the image was also part of The Jessie Willcox Smith Mother Goose, published in New York by Dodd, Mead & Company. It was later adapted for a series of small nursery-rhyme booklets, demonstrating the enduring popularity of Smith's illustrations.
With its soft vintage palette, charming garden details, and nostalgic storybook character, Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary makes a wonderful stitching project for admirers of Jessie Willcox Smith, vintage children's illustration, gardening, nursery rhymes, and the Golden Age of Illustration.
