A young boy sits on an open windowsill, his alphabet blocks temporarily forgotten beside him as he gazes dreamily into the world beyond the window. A tree stretches across the brilliant blue sky outside, while Smith's soft colors and gentle handling of light give the scene a wonderfully contemplative quality. Is he simply watching the world outside—or imagining someplace entirely different?
Smith created Dream Blocks as the frontispiece for Aileen Cleveland Higgins' 1908 book of children's poetry of the same name, published by Duffield & Company. It was the first of fourteen illustrations Smith contributed to the volume.
The composition beautifully introduces the book's themes of childhood and imagination. Smith uses the open window almost as a picture frame, placing the child between the familiar indoor world of his toys and the larger world beyond. The blocks resting beside him reinforce the connection to the book's title and its exploration of the imaginative world of childhood.
Jessie Willcox Smith (1863–1935) became one of the most beloved artists of America's Golden Age of Illustration, particularly admired for her sensitive portrayals of children. Dream Blocks demonstrates why: rather than presenting childhood as simply sweet or sentimental, Smith captures the boy completely absorbed in his own thoughts.
