Step through centuries of history with Doorways, an atmospheric cross stitch pattern created from an original photograph taken inside Castillo San Felipe del Morro in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
A succession of massive arched doorways draws the eye deeper and deeper into the centuries-old fortress. Weathered plaster, worn masonry, soft shadows, and subtle variations of cream, stone, gray, and earth tones reveal the character of a building shaped by generations of soldiers, changing military technology, and the tropical Caribbean climate.
Known simply as El Morro, Castillo San Felipe del Morro stands on a high promontory guarding the entrance to San Juan Bay. Spanish construction began in 1539, and the fortress continued to evolve for more than 250 years as engineers expanded it into a formidable six-level defensive complex overlooking the Atlantic.
El Morro defended San Juan through attacks by English and Dutch forces and remained a military installation long after Spanish rule ended in 1898. The United States military continued to use the fort into the 20th century before it became part of San Juan National Historic Site. In 1983, El Morro and the historic fortifications of San Juan were recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for their exceptional representation of European military architecture adapted to the Caribbean.
The repeating arches create a striking sense of depth and perspective, while the restrained, weathered palette gives the finished piece a quiet and timeless quality. Doorways is an intriguing project for stitchers who love architecture, historic places, Puerto Rico, travel, photography, and designs with a strong sense of place.
