This fine-art advanced cross stitch design was developed from the painting Children on the Shore (also known as Children Playing on the Beach) created by American artist Mary Cassatt in 1884. Cassatt exhibited this painting at the eighth and final impressionist exhibition in 1886 at which time she enjoyed the well established reputation of a tender painter of mothers and children. Cassatt viewed children with an honest eye, and captured their sometimes clumsy and random motions. She gave them a real rather than a cherubic look and interpretation. In this painting this is evident as she honestly portrays the child in the foreground with her little legs sprawled out for balance and a shovel gripped awkwardly in her little fist. She is intent only on the act of filling a bucket and is fully unaware of the viewer's gaze. This painting resides in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.
