Behind her stands one of Chicago's famous bronze lions, while a sleek passenger airplane crosses the vivid yellow sky.
The lion is an especially clever Chicago reference. The pair of monumental bronze lions flanking the entrance of the Art Institute of Chicago have greeted visitors since the 1890s and remain among the city's most recognizable landmarks. Here, the artist transforms one into a larger-than-life traveling companion for the fashionable visitor.
Below, a simplified Chicago skyline rises in geometric shapes, reinforcing the poster's distinctly mid-century graphic style. Oversized typography, flattened forms, dramatic scale, and a bold palette of yellow, red, black, white, and gray give the design the visual impact needed to capture the attention of prospective airline passengers.
Braniff International Airways was an important American carrier during the 20th century, and its destination advertising helped sell not merely airline tickets but the excitement and glamour of modern air travel. The Library of Congress preserves Braniff Chicago travel posters from the 1950s as examples of American travel advertising from the period.
