Capture the dramatic beauty of the Swiss landscape with this museum-quality full-coverage cross stitch pattern inspired by Gustave Courbet’s atmospheric masterpiece, Château de Chillon.

Painted in 1873, this striking landscape depicts the famous medieval Château de Chillon rising beside the waters of Lake Geneva beneath storm-filled skies and rugged alpine peaks. Courbet’s powerful brushwork and rich natural textures create an intense sense of mood and movement, blending realism with emotional depth.

The Château de Chillon is an island castle located at the eastern end of Lake Geneva on the shore between Montreux and Villeneuve, giving access to the Alpine valley of the Rhone. The first written record of the Château de Chillon was made in 1005. It was used then to control the road from Burgundy to the Great Saint Bernard Pass. In the mid-12th century it was the summer home to the Counts of Savoy who had a fleet of ships on Lake Geneva, and was greatly expanded in 1248 by Peter II. It is open to the public for visits and tours and is listed as Switzerland's most popular historic monument.

One of the leading figures of the French Realist movement, Courbet was celebrated for portraying nature with honesty, immediacy, and strength. In Château de Chillon, he transforms the historic castle and surrounding landscape into a dramatic scene filled with shifting light, misty mountains, and turbulent water.

Deep earth tones, luminous water reflections, and atmospheric clouds make this artistic cross-stitch design especially rewarding for stitchers who love historic architecture, dramatic landscapes, and museum-quality fine art.

Carefully charted to preserve the rich textures, moody palette, and painterly detail of the original artwork, this full-coverage pattern offers a sophisticated stitching experience.

Perfect for lovers of European landscapes, historic castles, Alpine scenery, French Realism, and museum-quality artistic cross-stitch designs.
