This beautiful cross stitch design, Château de Chillon, was developed from a painting done in 1874 by French artist Gustave Corbet. The Château de Chillon is an island castle located at the eastern end of Lake Geneva on the shore between Montreux and Villeneuve, giving access to the Alpine valley of the Rhone. The first written record of the Château de Chillon was made in 1005. It was used then to control the road from Burgundy to the Great Saint Bernard Pass. In the mid-12th century it was the summer home to the Counts of Savoy who had a fleet of ships on Lake Geneva, and was greatly expanded in 1248 by Peter II. It is open to the public for visits and tours and is listed as Switzerland's most popular historic monument. Château de Chillon was sold at auction in January of 2009 at Christie's for $151,530.
