Bring the graceful beauty of Japanese flower-and-bird art to your stitching with Camellia and Mallard Ducks, adapted from an 1883 work by Japanese artist Kōno Bairei.
A pair of mallard ducks rests beside quiet water beneath the branches of a flowering camellia. Above them, large pink-and-white blossoms unfold among deep green leaves, while buds, grasses, and delicate waterside plants complete the tranquil natural setting.
The composition comes from Bairei's celebrated Bairei Kachō Gafu (Bairei's Drawing Book of Flowers and Birds), a two-volume collection containing 50 flower-and-bird designs. The Chiba City Museum of Art dates the work to 1883, during Japan's Meiji period.
Kachō-ga—literally “flower-and-bird painting”—has a long tradition in Japanese art, bringing together careful observation of plants and animals with compositions that emphasize beauty, season, and the rhythms of the natural world. Bairei, a Kyoto painter, became particularly associated with this tradition. The National Diet Library preserves and displays his flower-and-bird designs, including this composition.
Here, the strong vertical sweep of the camellia branches balances the quieter horizontal lines of the water below. The male mallard's dark green head and flashes of blue contrast with the softer plumage of his companion, while the brilliant pink and red accents of the camellias draw the eye upward through the design.
An ornate printed border and original Japanese text remain part of the composition, giving the finished piece the character of the historic Japanese print from which it was adapted.
