At first glance, the luminous form floating against the darkness of space appears to be an enormous celestial butterfly. In reality, this is NGC 6302, also known as the Butterfly Nebula or Bug Nebula—a planetary nebula created by a dying star. Brilliant clouds of glowing gas sweep outward into two enormous wings, filled with fiery oranges, delicate pinks and purples, luminous whites, and touches of blue-green against a field of glittering stars.
The beauty of the image disguises an incredibly violent event. The star at its center was once about five times the mass of our Sun and has cast its outer layers into space. Some of the gas is heated to more than 36,000°F and races outward at more than 600,000 miles per hour. The resulting butterfly-shaped nebula spans more than two light-years and lies roughly 3,800 light-years away in the constellation Scorpius.
NASA's Hubble Space Telescope captured this remarkable view in 2009 using its Wide Field Camera 3. Six different filters were used to record narrow wavelengths of light, with colors assigned to the resulting exposures to reveal the nebula's extraordinary structure and composition.
