This intriguing abstract painting, Upward, was done by Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky, and was the inspiration for this fine-art downloadable cross stitch design. The colors are absolutely beautiful. While the forms in this painting are anchored together and balanced on either side of a continuous vertical line, the effect that one feels is rising energy as the very top form seems to be penetrating space. As Kandinsky wrote when he painted Upward, "I do not choose form consciously; it chooses itself within me." This painting resides at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York.
