The Song of Love, was developed from a painting done by Italian artist Giorgio de Chirico in 1914. Chirico painted in the Surrealist style; however, this painting was done by him ten years before the movement was introduced by artist André Breton in 1924.

The Song of Love is one of de Chirico's most famous works. This painting brings together completely unrelated objects: a small wall with a mounted Greek sculpted head, a surgeon's glove, a green ball and the outline of a locomotive. This image of a locomotive occurred several times in de Chirico's paintings, perhaps because his father was an engineer who worked on the construction of the Greek railway system.
