The Gleaners was painted in Pointilist style in a field in Éragny-sur-Epte in northern France, where the Pissarro family settled in 1884. In February, 1890 Pissarro showed this work as well as 24 others at the Boussod & Valadon Gallery in Paris. Pissarro was told by the owners of the gallery they were unhappy with his pointilist style because it "frightened the buyers." The original painting resides at the Kunstmuseum Basel in Switzerland.
