This downloadable cross stitch design was developed from the painting The Drought done by British Artist Simeon Solomon in 1866-72. It depicts the drought catastrophe that occurred some years before Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, besieged and conquered Jerusalem in the year 586 B.C. Judah is in mourning, the outcry of Jerusalem rises, and the prophet Jeremiah's description inspired Solomon to create this painting. The Drought shows two servants sent by their nobles to bring water, only to find the cisterns empty, having to return with their vessels empty. They covered their heads in shame and humiliation.
Solomon was raised in an Orthodox Jewish family, steeped in the traditions of his faith. In spite of the sadness felt in this painting, we must appreciate the artistic genius of the artist in his ability to bring out the deep feeling of remorse these servants suffered. And, the painting is so beautifully done. The use and blending of the colors are to be especially noted. This painting resides at the Jewish Museum in New York City.
