This fine-art cross stitch chart was created from the painting The Arnolfini Marriage which artist Jan Van Eyck painted in 1434. It is a portrait of Giovanni di Nicolao Arnolfini, a member of a merchant family from Lucca living in Bruges, and his wife, Giovanna Cenami. There is some discussion as to whether or not it was intended to be a record of their wedding. It is suggested it could be a celebration of their married life or the close relationship between the couple. There are secular and religious items in the painting with several levels of meaning. The chandelier with one lit candle signifies matrimony, the removed shoes suggest sanctity, the small dog is a symbol of fidelity, the mirror on the back wall infers witnesses are present, the crystal prayer beads suggest piety of the couple, and the oranges on the window sill indicates innocence prior to Adam and Eve's fall from grace. This painting is one of Van Eyck's greatest masterpieces and resides at the National Gallery in London.
