The painting, Surprise! Tiger in a Tropical Storm was done by French Post-Impressionist painter, Henri Rousseau in 1891; and this fine-art cross stitch design was developed from this now well-known painting. Rousseau's art was not fully appreciated until shortly before his death in 1910. His contemporaries Picasso, Matisse, and Toulouse-Lautrec all admired his work, and art dealer Ambroise Vollard purchased this painting along with some of Rousseau's other works around 1908. Surprise! Tiger in a Tropical Storm was purchased by the National Gallery in London in 1972, with a contribution from the billionaire philanthropist Walter H. Annenberg.
