This advanced fine-art cross-stitch design, Donkey, Zebra, Horse, was developed from a print in the Naturgelchicte des Teirreichs, or Natural History of the Animal Realm by Dr Gotthilf Heinrich von Schubert, which was a large picture atlas for school and home. This is a Bilder Buche in the wonderful family and tradition of German children's books and similar to the Hanselmann that has continued to be such a favorite. The prints from these books are a charming window to a bygone era. This print was published in 1889 in vivid old chromolithographs, the artists being the most outstanding of the day.
