This downloadable fine-art cross stitch design was developed from the painting, Dance at the Moulin Rouge, a Post-Impressionism painting created in 1890 by French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. This scene takes place at the Moulin Rouge cabaret built in Paris in 1889 and portrays two dancers who are dancing the can-can in the middle of the crowded dance hall. An inscription by Toulouse-Lautrec, recently discovered on the back of the painting, says, "The instruction of the new ones by Valentine the Boneless," (Valentin le Désossé) who was a well-known dancer at the Moulin Rouge, and shown teaching the newest addition to the cabaret. In the foreground, there is an aristocratic woman in pink, and images of other aristocratic people are scattered around the background, most of whom were friends and acquaintances of Toulouse-Lautrec, such as poet Edward Yeats, the club owner and even Toulouse-Lautrec's father. The identity of the woman in pink is unknown, but it shows Toulouse-Lautrec's profound ability to portray the more detailed beauty of the woman amongst his almost "careless" depiction of the others. This painting is currently on display at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
