This advanced fine-art cross stitch design, Children on the Seashore, was developed from a painting done by Spanish artist Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida in 1903. Many of Sorolla's paintings were done in plein-air which he preferred . . . focusing on light, color and the movement of his subjects. He had a great love of beaches and seascapes and the intense colors of the Spanish Mediterranean coast, which is so well represented in this painting.
In 1906 a major exhibition of his works, which included landscape painting, portrait art and figure painting was held at the Galeries Georges Petit in Paris, which led to his appointment as Officer of the French Legion of Honour, his election to the French Academy of Fine Arts and the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. Sorolla's paintings can be found in some of the best art museums in the world.
