This fine-art cross stitch design, Camelia, Mallard Duck, was developed from a woodblock print done by Bairei Kono, a highly renowned Japanese artist who began his painting studies at the age of eight in the Maruyama School of naturalist painting in the imperial city and old capital of Japan, Kyoto. As an adult he was instrumental in the establishment of the Kyoto School of painting and subsequently opened his own studio to other painters after retiring. His woodblock prints of birds and flowers are among the most revered and famous in Japan where Bairei is compared to Audubon. Bairei's skill as an artist was combined with his craftsmanship of wood block carving, producing works of breath-taking beauty. He produced vibrant color and beauty by combining a series of six or seven wood blocks for each print put on softly aged double rice paper.
