This delightful fine-art downloadable cross stitch design was developed from the painting, Baker, done in 1920 by Russian artist Boris Kustodiev. Kustodiev's father died when he was very young, leaving the financial burdens on his mother. The family rented a small wing in a wealthy merchant's house, which opened up a new world for Kustodiev. He was able to observe the plentiful way of life and later wrote, "The whole tenor of the rich and plentiful merchant way of life was there right under my nose... It was like something out of an Ostrovsky play." Kustodiev retained his childhood memories and observations and later recreated them in his paintings. No doubt the subject of this painting was a pleasant childhood memory.
