History has it that it was first built in the 9th century, rebuilt in the 12th, 14th, and 16th centuries and collapsed unexpectedly on the morning of July 14, 1902. The present-day structure was built in 1912 as an exact replica of its predecessor. The Campanile was built with five bells to communicate different messages. The largest bell rang at the beginning and end of the workday, one rang at midday, another rang to summon members to council meetings, a fourth proclaimed a session of the Senate, and the last announced executions. The bells still ring today, but only to maintain tradition and entertain the tourists. There is a great view of Venice from the tower. Weather permitting, you can see as far as the Alps.
